MOVIE STORY

  • Sattam Oru Iruttarai a remake of S A Chandrashekar's Sattam Oru Iruttarai Debutante director Sneha Britto is thrilled that her film Starring Taman, Piaa and Bindu Madhavi, the film has music by Vijay Antony.
  • The girl, who has been travelling to different parts of Tamil Nadu to launch the film's album, says, "SAC sir was always with me, guiding me through the making. It's a difficult subject to direct, but we all worked as a team, and everyone was very co-operative."
  • The original one was a family action drama, but this film will be a love action drama and included a cute love story in it, which everyone will enjoy

MOVIE REVIEW

  • Renowned director/producer S.A. Chandrasekar’s grand niece Sneha Britto takes her first step in cinema as a director with the remake of S.A.Chandrasekar’s widely successful film Sattam Oru Iruttarai. With S.A. Chandrasekar contributing to this project in the position of a creative head, the story has been adapted to suit with the present times.
  • The premise of 2012’s Sattam Oru Iruttarai (SOI) is in essence the same as the original. The story revolves around a young man on a mission to carry out his vengeance against a group of baddies who have caused him a personal loss. While the original film had the loss of family members, this one, as being advertised in the promos, is for the sake of love.
  • The film stars Taman who recently made his first on screen appearance in a film titled Aachariyangal. Unlike his first film, his role in SOI demands an all-round commercial performance such as action, comedy, romance, drama and dance. One must say that he’s fairly adequate. The intensity that he displayed in the flashback jail scene is an indicator of the young man’s acting skill but it was found wanting for more in other places. Reema Sen plays the role of a cop and displays the authority of a police officer and that of an older sibling quite well. The two heroines in the movie Bindhu Madhavi and Pia Bajpai have very little scope for performance but they make their presence felt with every given opportunity apart from being relegated as just eye candy. Bindhu especially displays good dancing skills in a couple of songs.
  • One of the key areas where the film shows deficiency is in character development. There are several characters in the film whose roles haven’t been etched out comprehensively. There are quite a few scenes where Taman is in the company of his friends, nearly 7-8 of them, out of which only 2-3 have anything to contribute. The others seemed to be just assigned to fill screen space. Erode Mahesh, stand-up comedian making his silver screen debut, is one of the friends who has the major role as the one providing comic-relief which turns out to be a bit of a hit and miss. The encounters between Taman and Pia Bajpai post the interval present itself as being juvenile and it results in hampering the audience’s connection with their upcoming romance.
  • The other problem that SOI faces is that, just as in the case of law itself, the film too has several logical loopholes. While the protagonist is shown to commit the perfect murder, it’s only at the expense of the police force’s nearsightedness, which may be convenient for the narrative but hard to comprehend in real life. Also, why are the police focused only on a confessional when there are other methods available to prove the guilty? These are elements that indicate that SOI is lost in time in terms of its concept.
  • C.J. Rajkumar’s camerawork is adept as he’s employed the handheld method to bring out the intensity of the scenes. He has also ensured that songs are picturized with the same color and vibe of Vijay Antony’s music.
  • Sneha Britto has many years ahead of her and should treat this as an opportunity that not many are provided with. Unfortunately for her SOI is a script that was successful during a period where family melodrama ruled the roost but now the audience has moved on to a different era, one that she should look to be a part of.

MOVIE REVIEW

  • After an intense Nadunisi Naaygal, Gautham Vasudev Menon enters his home turf of Cupid’s zone in this much publicized, much expected Ilayaraja musical Neethaane En Ponvasantham with a fresh new pair Jiiva and Samantha. Santhanam is also an additional new element in this Gautham Menon’s romantic enterprise.
  • It is interesting to watch a film that opens with a comedian but that’s the popularity Santhanam enjoys and the actor never disappoints the audience. When he starts the film with the ‘pidikkalai mamu, padikkara college’, the crowd goes into raptures.
  • Story wise, there is nothing new in NEP; it is about two people in love and the emotions they go through in different phases of their life. The characters of Jiiva and Samantha have been well etched out and the school and college segments are a treat to watch. For all those who are passing that phase or fresh out of that stage, it is a revelation of sorts and for those who have crossed that beautiful chapter in life, it is a pleasant nostalgia down memory lane.
  • The current day urban romance is an amalgam of a high octane expectations, ego trips, misunderstandings, low tolerance levels and societal pressures. Gautham Menon has attempted to bring this out through his lead characters and has succeeded fairly well. However, if the presentation was a bit more succinct and far more engrossing, NEP would have worked better.
  • NEP does have its bright moments but sadly it is not homogenous. The first half sails smoothly with school and college romance but the pre-interval block of a lengthy shot is a dampner. Wonder why Gautham Menon had opted for such a shot when the emotions being conveyed in the scene are of very serious and intense in nature.
  • Songs of Ilayaraja propel the story forward but for a generation that is edgy and attention challenged, the numerous tracks prove to be a definite distraction.  Nani makes a fleeting, handsome appearance in ‘Kaatrai Konjam’ number. Pace is very languorous and uneven in NEP and beyond a point the rigmarole of Jiiva and Samantha breaking up and joining again and again becomes tiring.
  • There are bright points in NEP like the performances of Jiiva and Samantha. Jiiva looks every bit like Varun Krishnan and brings immense spontaneity and dignity to the role but it is a little difficult to accept him as school student. Samantha looks ravishing and shows improvement from her previous performances. The coy look and the sweet smile during the opening culturals scene and the school segments make her very adorable. However, she needs to hone her skills in the heavy duty emotional scenes.
  • The immediate scene post interval is the high point in the film and Gautham should definitely be appreciated for writing a scene in self-deprecating mode and Santhanam brings the roof down in those ten minutes. All those who leave the hall during interval, ensure you return to your seats in time. It is definitely the show stealer of NEP. Santhanam’s love interest Jenny is an interesting find and is quite natural!
  • Dialogues like “pey bungalow maadiri irukku, adhaan ponnunga inga irukkaang pola” and “andha kutti kutti box ellam tick pannittiyaa Varun” bring out the apt kind of feel.  Some of the verbal exchanges between the lead pair are so authentic that contemporary urban populace can relate much better.  Even though the suspense element in the climax is appreciable, the excessive verbosity and the lengthiness work against it.To encapsulate, NEP is an endearing urban love story with its highs and lows which could have worked well had it been tauter, more cohesive and more engaging.

MOVIE STORY

  • The film starts with an introduction to the main characters: Bomman (Vikram Prabhu), the protagonist, his pet elephant (Manickam), his Uncle (Thambi Ramaiah), and a sidekick (Ashvin Raja). Meanwhile, in a village dominated by old principles, an elephant (Komban) ravages crops and ambushes its people. Frustrated by this and without any help from the forest officers, their leader decides to bring a Kumki elephant to tame Komban.
  • Bomman and his crew reach the village as imposters to stay for a couple of days. But life begins to change for Bomman when he falls in love with Alli (Lakshmi Menon), the daughter of the village head. She is at first reluctant keeping in mind the village’s principles. But she soon starts to fall for Bomman. Life goes on smoothly, until Komban starts attacking the village. Komban kills mama and the sidekick, and injures Bomman. In the ensuing fight, both Komban and Manickam are killed. Bomman rues the fact that because of his love all his crew gets killed and leaves the village alone.

MOVIE REVIEW

  • Prabu Solomon’s latest release Kumki introduces two bright young talents in Vikram Prabhu and Lakshmi Menon. Thambi Ramaiah also adds weight to the cast with his presence as a character actor. At the start of the movie we are told that Kumki is actually an elephant that is used to tame wild elephants and send them back to the forests.
  • Aadhi Kadu is one such village that is forced to seek the services of a Kumki till their harvest, after a wild elephant named Komban goes on a rampage and kills three people. This village is bound by strict customs and rituals that are in place since 200 years.
  • Meanwhile, Bomman and his elephant Manickam are almost like brothers and Manickam is a nice gentle elephant that is primarily used during festivals for processions. Due to circumstances, Bomman volunteers to go to Aadhi Kadu with his elephant masquerading as a Kumki elephant. He is also smitten by Alli, a young girl in the village.
  • With the menace of Komban nearing and with the increasing trust and dependence that the village shows on him and his elephant, Bomman is caught in a difficult situation. His love also keeps intensifying on the other hand. How he handles this entire Catch 22 situation is the crux of Kumki.First things first, the premise of Kumki is totally new. The lifestyle of a mahout and the information that is presented to us about wild elephants, kumki, their manners etc. is hitherto untold in Tamil cinema.
  • The film is brilliantly shot and the visuals are dream-like. Hats off to cinematographer Sukumar. The shots of Bomman taking pull-ups on his elephant’s tusks, the beautiful shots of the fully harvested sunflower fields and the jaw-dropping waterfalls shown in the Sollitaley number will stay with you for long. The pristine locales of Theni are such a lush treat to the eye.Imman is the other hero of Kumki with all his numbers competing for top honors. Soi, Sollitaley, Ayyayo Anandhame and Nee Yeppo Pulla are strong contenders for being the song of the year. His menacing use of wind instruments in his re-recording is apt for the huge elephants on screen.
  • Lakshmi Menon shines in her natural portrayal and her ease at portraying even intricate expressions is a true gift. Thambi Ramiah is almost like the hero of the movie till the climax. His one-liners, gestures, reactions play to the gallery big time. It does get monotonous beyond a point as scene after scene is dominated by this free-spirited actor. The sidekick named Undiyal also provides some laughter with his dialogues.
  • Coming to Vikram Prabhu, he proves that he is indeed from the Sivaji Ganesan household in the intensely emotional scenes in the climax. He is also at ease portraying angst, gratitude and rage. His physique is a major plus and this hunk is sure to go places. He can be expected to carry on the Ganesan family lineage. One particular scene when he realizes how much trust and respect the village is having on him is a nice example of his merit.
  • On the downside, the film’s pace is steady and it doesn’t get racy till the end. The mandatory VFX shots dedicated to the action scenes featuring the elephants are sadly below-par and standout sorely. But, these blips aren’t major enough to affect the movie’s fortunes at the box-office.Kumki should prove to be another jewel in Prabhu Solomon’s crown. His team’s work in giving us such a good looking film which also has its heart in place, is commendable. Kudos too, for the ending which doesn’t abide by commercial cinema’s unwritten rules.

The sequence of events wherein the friends try to hide Prem's problem to his parents, lover and take him to wedding hall, convince him to marry Dhanalakshmi, brings the roof down with laughter.

MOVIE REVIEW

  • Everyone has memories, sweet and hard. Some hard memories remain painful forever, and some brings a smile or even laughter when looked back. Naduvula Konjam PakkathaKaanom (NKPK) is one such difficult memory that makes everyone roll on the floor and laugh when narrated. This is a true story of four friends Prem Kumar, Saras, Bagavathy and Balaji.
  • Balaji Tharaneetharan makes an entry into the film industry as a director with this film. NKPK is an adaptation of a real incident involving himself, cinematographer Prem Kumar and two of their friends, Saras and Bagavathy. Prem Kumar has wielded the camera for the film, while Vijay Sethupathy of Pizza fame has portrayed his role. The original Bagavathy (aka Bucks) appears as himself in the film, Rajkumar has taken up the role of Balaji (aka Bajji) and Vigneshwaran plays Saras. Gayathri of 18 Vayasu fame plays Dhanalakshmi, the love interest of Prem.
  • The story revolves around Prem and his friends. Prem’s marriage is set to happen in two days and to loosen up from the pressure, he goes out to play cricket along with his three buddies. He falls down while playing, gets hit on his head and temporarily loses his recent memories (things that happened in the last year). Unfortunately he loses the memory of his fiancée, Dhanalakshmi (Gayathri) too. It’s now up to the three friends to get Prem married to his forgotten girlfriend, without letting anyone (including the girlfriend) know about the accident that happened to him. Will the marriage happen peacefully and will Prem regain his memory? Watch NKPK on big screens.
  • This is a very serious film, but it is almost impossible to control the laughter, looking at the unfortunate happenings. It is a brilliant technique to introduce the four protagonists and their lives through the title song, ‘Excuse Me Sir’. All the four central characters have done a brilliant job, especially Vigneshwaran and Rajkumar. The panic and fear, when Prem loses his memory has been beautifully portrayed by the three friends. Especially Bajji’s reactions and Bucks’ absurd advices are hilarious to the core. Vijay Sethupathy is very convincing as a guy with memory loss, with his ever pondering looks and the character of Saras is a pretty serious and intense one and Raj Kumar fits the bill perfectly. Gayathri makes a short appearance, but does well.
  • The greatest positives in the film are Bajji’s petrified reactions, Bucks’ authoritativeness, funny dialogues, unexpected turn of events and shocking memories of Prem that sits in place of those forgotten. The director has maintained the suspense and managed to keep the audience thrilled through the end. With just one word, ‘Ennachu’, the director brings out chuckles, exasperation and sorrow from the audience.
  • Ved Shankar, a product of AR Rahman’s music school, has delivered the songs for the film and Siddharth Vipin has done the background scores. The latter’s naughty and playful tunes during the serious scenes trigger laughter. But, it was unfortunate that none of the tracks of Ved Shankar, other than ‘Excuse Me Sir’ and Omelette Potta were added in the film.
  • The saloon scene is a cracker and the hairstylist does a brilliant job. The Schindler’s list style finish, where the real characters come on screen was pretty touching too, though it creates a documentary feel.Cinematographer Prem Kumar’s close ups and some stagnant shots prove very appropriate in capturing the emotions perfectly. His work, especially the low angle tights, too contributes to the facetiousness of the film.
  • The film moves very slow, but it is understandably the nature of the story. Monotony breaks in when Prem keeps repeating the same dialogues. Since that is exactly what happened it is not a grave mistake too. But the sound design could have been taken care of. In some places the BGMs are too loud that the dialogues go unheard.
  • On the whole, this frightening experience of the four friends is a roll-on-the-floor-and-laugh experience for the audience. The male populace can relate to the story more and will agree with the reactions and the behavior of the protagonists.
  • Off the record, people say that it is immoral and inhuman to laugh at others hardship, but Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom doesn’t fall under that category. So laugh your heart out!

MOVIE STORY

  • Arulappasamy (Vishnu) is a young man who is an alcoholic and wastrel who is a constant embarrassment for his hardworking parents. Esther (Sunaina) is an orphan girl who is adopted by a nun and she stays in the church. Arulappan slowly gets attracted to Esther and his love for her, changes him.
  • He gives up drinking and wants to work so that he can marry Esther. But the local fishermen do not allow him to go into the sea. The young man due to his determination buys a boat , marries his love and life is all rosy, till fate intervenes.

MOVIE REVIEW

  • A single question on what the Indian government has done for thousands of fishermen who are shot in mid-sea forms the basic fulcrum around which director Seenu Ramasamy has woven his tale of romance with fishing community as the backdrop. That said, there is no political flavor of combustible nature or fiery barrage of jingoistic claptrap in Neer Paravai. In fact whatever little has been discussed on this issue in the film, articulates immense maturity and sensitivity of the maker.
  • Love is catholic and life is fleeting. And what love does to a young alcoholic wastrel when he meets an orphan who is raised by the church is Neer Paravai all about. The place of happening is a small fishing hamlet where sea is the major source of livelihood for people.
  • Neer Paravai abounds in many pluses, one of them being Balasubramaniem’s cinematography. Be it the sparkling sea or the sandy shore or the majestic church or the abodes of the people, his visuals are all pleasingly caressing. Balu’s lens is effective with alluring interplay of light and angles.
  • Casting is perfect in Neer Paravai and all the artists have been chosen with a lot of acuity from the pivot till the margins. While Vishnu is effective, Sunaina steals the thunder with her deglam looks and expressive body language. There are quite a few veterans in the supporting cast like Saranya Ponvannan, Thambi Ramaiah, Vadivukkarasi and Azhagam Perumal. Nanditha Das plays the older version of Sunaina who creates an impact in her small role. 'Poo' fame Ram as Vishnu’s father comes out trumps followed by Arul Das, Devaraj, Anupama Kumar and Black Pondy. On the music front, Raghunanthan’s score adds real spunk to the enterprise and his Para Para number is top class with spiraling frenzy that elevates the experience to great heights with all its versions.
  • Dialogues by Jayamohan and Seenu Ramasamy sparkle with pertinent emotions like 'oruthanukku ulcerum kaadhalum varaama kudiyai nirutha maattaan' (ulcer and love alone can make a man abstain from liquor), 'mooppungaradhu thaana varanum; namma poyee vaanga koodadhu' (old age should naturally come and it should not be bought in advance), 'naan karuppa irukkira vellaikkaaran' (I am a white man who is black) and many more.
  • Through the character of Samudirakani, Seenu Ramasamy raises pertinent questions on the important issue of fishermen’s plight and the general impression about Muslims beings terrorists. The laudable aspect is that he has eschewed regional chauvinism and receives applause when he says there is only Indian fisherman and not Tamil fishermen. Kudos Seenu Ramasamy for your prudence!
  • Comedy is unobtrusive and is seamlessly interspersed in the film. When Vishnu mimics Sunaina's ‘saathaane appaale po’ act, it is difficult to stifle a smile. Thambi Ramiah’s ‘spirit’ed antics accompanied by pithy dialogues spice up the proceedings. A passing shot of Kanchi Acharya in the doctor’s clinic rounds up the placating move of Seenu Ramasamy towards all religions.
  • The pace of Neer Paravai is marginally slow but that is the rhythm the film is fixed on and is uniform. There are no twists or unexpected turns but only a general curiosity about how the director is going to proceed with his story. To sum it, all the departments of Neer Paravai have worked in tandem resulting in a satisfying experience for the viewer. Seenu Ramasamy proves that he is after all an efficient story teller who makes his mark in Neer Paravi too.

    • The film gets off to a slow start after Vijay’s mass intro with the ‘Kutti Puli’ number. The romantic episodes with Kajal Aggarwal are bearable thanks to some high-voltage songs by Harris Jayaraj (Alaikaa Laikka and the wildly popular Google Google stand out) and Jayaram’s (playing Jagdish’s senior in the Army) funny interventions.
    • Kajal is the typical commercial cinema heroine who makes glamorous appearances in the songs and is also there for some comic relief. The tomboyish voice that has dubbed for her, enhances her character. Her stylish costumes and youthful beauty are a nice distraction from the main action packed plot. Jayaram’s legendary comic timing is intact while Sathyan has a commendable and sizable presence in the movie as Jagdish’s police friend. His proficiency in the English and Hindi speaking portions is a pleasant surprise. Vidyut Jamwal looks a million bucks with his long locks, stubble and macho physique. He is a nice matchup for the invincible hero.
    • Coming back to our main man Vijay, he looks ever youthful and the V shape that he so painstakingly maintains looks even more tight and muscular in Thuppakki. His prowess at dance and fights is well-known and Murugadoss has packaged and presented the movie perfectly in sync with Vijay’s skills at commercial cinema. While on the one hand, Jagdish is a brainy guy who uses the Rubik’s cube and his apple laptop to decode maps, on the other hand, his brawny side is also prominent thanks to his blazer, glares and a stylish gait. The pre-interval scenes with the twelve sleeper cells and the fight scenes with a sniffer dog in tow in the second half are a royal treat for Vijay fanatics. The star’s comfort level with Hindi and English makes his character as an urban Mumbai Thamizhan appear more genuine and real.
    • Harris Jayaraj’s songs are a raging hit already and this is a nice score on the whole from Harris.  The music that repeats while Vidyut makes an appearance on screen is pulsating.
    • Santosh Sivan’s camerawork is flawless and has captured the raw energy and crowds of Mumbai very well. The VFX for the blast scene at the start could have been better. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is seamless and makes sure that the movie is not boring one bit. Even though the locations in the ‘Vennilave’ song are a treat, the song overall seems redundant and could have been avoided.
    • Vijay’s costumer and stylist deserve a big round of applause for making the star dazzle in a suave manner with stylish and trendy clothes. His Tees are truly rocking thanks to his toned arms and dashboard abs.
    • On the downside, the last encounter between Vijay and Vidyut could have been better given the nice manner in which the movie was laid out for the finale. But, this is just a minor blip in an otherwise wholesome commercial treat. The manner in which Vijay manages to keep his mission wrapped in secrecy from his higher authorities in the Army is another question mark.
    • To wrap it up, Thuppakki should turn out to be a hugely profitable venture for the makers and a rewarding experience for the audience. The last dialog, about Army men living in tough conditions for 11 months based on the memories of their short vacation, makes Thuppakki’s intentions of being an ode to the Army, a commendable one.
